HCB Group has been supporting disability insurers and employers in the UK and Ireland since 1984. We have a proven customer service that has stood the test of time, and are proud to have built a reputation based on integrity and reliability.

HCB Group’s mission is to Redefine Occupational Health. The aim is to change the mind-set across the market of what Occupational Health actually delivers. Rather than the traditional ‘Medical model’, HCB Group’s approach blends compassion and common sense and draws on rigorous scientific research, which is constantly refined and updated.

Absence Management, Case Management and Rehabilitation are combined together into a single service, recognising that a significant majority of sickness absences arise from social, rather than medical circumstances. The focus is on the absentee with the Clinical Case Manager engaging positively with them, dismantling return-to-work barriers, and working with them to agree a sustainable return to work plan that works for them, and their employer. Statistically, the HCB Group model returns 80% of people to work in less than 80 days.

Tailored support

If we have learned anything over the last quarter of a century, it is that every client is different. Insurers have very different claims philosophies, and employers have different cultures, some supportive and paternalistic, and others quite the opposite.

The Science Behind the Service

HCB Group clinical Case Managers are laser-focussed on sustainable outcomes. Their work is underpined by three pillars, which combine to make HCB Group a unique provider of Employee Health Management Systems.

Understand the Cause

Traditional Occupational Health and earlier iterations of Early Intervention Services all immediately deployed the medical model, even where there was no medical condition to treat. HCB know that a significant number of absences are socially determined, and given a medical label by Doctors, or even an assumed medical label by the absentee. For this reason, the HCB service takes the time to understand the real cause of absence, to ensure that appropriate intervention and support is provided.

Control Duration

One of the greatest causes of drain on sick pay or insurance claim funds, is ‘drift’. This is a result of inefficient support to the absentee, and apathy in terms of a focus on an outcome. HCB carefully works to craft a meaningful return to work plan, agreed with the employer, and actively case manages the absence in collaboration with the absentee and the employer to drive an outcome without distraction.

Communicate Positively

Did your Mother ever say to you “treat people like you would like to be treated yourself?”. The same goes for communication. HCB’s Case Managers undergo award winning training from Momenta UK, which combines brain science, nudge theory and motivational interviewing. This training, called ‘Communicate to Influence’ combines these evidence-based practises, all designed to improve outcomes from conversation.
